Throwback Thursday: Skincare Galore - DIY Face Mask, Scrubs, Steam

Happy Thursday all! One more day til the weekend... Who is ready?  I'll be the first to raise my hand, both hands at that. But anyway, hope you are all doing well. The weather is fast turning cold so please do bundle up and keep warm! :)

Speaking of the cold, Arizona has been quite nippy this week. Ever since November started, it's like Arizona realized we were behind schedule or something because on November 1st, the temp dropped to low-70s, high-60s when it was comfortably warm in the high-80s, low-90s the previous night on Halloween. I kid you not, I had shorts and a tee on when I took the kids out trick or treating, come home, go to bed wake up to a cloudy sky and breezy morning. From then, it started... Arizona officially joined the others in Fall.

I don't want to sound like I'm whiny or complaining. LOL. It's just, I was born and raised in Arizona, I've dealt with severe heat all of my life. I love the heat, I'd rather the heat. Although Arizona's Winter temperature doesn't dip as low as other states, it is still cold to me. So I am fully aware that while it is snowing by the ton in other states, I am here complaining about a bit of breeze and moderate temperature dip. Haha. I am sorry but this girl needs her sunshine. :P

Even though the temperature barely dropped, I can already tell it's taking a toll on my skin already. My skin is super dried and needs intense moisturizing at night, my lips are starting to crack. Not good, not good at all. :/ First world problems here... worry about sunburns and sun damaged skin in the Summer and now, a whole 'nother issue once Winter rolls around.

I am bringing you a throwback galore of DIYs skincare! This is basically almost all of the recipes I have posted throughout this first year. Some of which y'all instantly recognized because I keep going back to it. Speaking of which, my blog turns one in December! :D But yeah, below are all of the recipes. Hope you'll all enjoy and give them a try. Feel free to leave me comments if there's any questions or if you simply just wanna share your experience.

almond scrub

You will need:
– 1 teaspoon of Almond Powder
– 1 teaspoon of Honey
– Water (optional)
What to do:
– Mix 1 teaspoon of Almond Powder and Honey to form a paste  in a small bowl
* You can apply the paste just like that or you can add a tad water to make it more liquidy.
How to use it:
– I recommend using a brush to apply the paste onto the face
– Leave on for about 5 to 10 minutes
– Use your fingers to massage your face, the grains act as an exfoliation
– Rinse with warm water and finish with a splash of cool water
– Pat to dry

lip scrub

What you’ll need:
– 2 Tablespoon of Brown Sugar
– 1/2 Tablespoon of Olive Oil
– 1/2 Tablespoon of Honey
What to do:
– Mix everything together thoroughly.
– Place the scrub in a covered container.
– Refrigerate for about an hour.
How to use it:
– Mix the scrub again with a spoon to make sure everything is blended.
– With the spoon or your fingers, pick up as much scrub as you feel adequate.
– Gently massage the scrub onto your lips, in a back and forth, up and down motion for about 30 seconds.
(You can also use a soft-bristle toothbrush too.)
– Rinse with warm water.
– Gently wipe clean.
– Apply your favorite lip balm for hydration.

honey-almond mask

What You’ll Need:
– 1 Tablespoon Oatmeal
– 2 Tablespoons Honey
– 2 Tablespoons Buttermilk
– 2 – 2 1/2 Tablespoon(s) Almond Powder
What To Do:
– Add all of the ingredients together into a blender.
– Blend the for about 60 seconds until somewhat of a smooth paste. (However, you do not want to over blend it, you want the oats to retain its graininess for exfoliation purposes.)
– Scrape the paste into a clean bowl.
How To Use It:
– Gently apply to your clean face.
– Allow to sit for about 15-20 minutes.
– When you go to rinse the mask off, use your fingers to gently massage the mask onto your face. The grains will serve as the last purpose as an exfoliant.
– Rinse off with warm water and splash with cold water to close up the pores.
– Pat to dry.

pumpkin mask

What you’ll need:
– 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
– 3 Tablespoons Honey
– 1 Tablespoon Pumpkin Puree
– 1 Tablespoon Ground Coffee
– 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
** OPTIONAL**
– For folks with oily skin like myself, feel free to add a Teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar to the mask.
– For people with dry skin, a Teaspoon of Yogurt should do the trick.
What to do:
– In a small bowl, start by mixing the dry ingredients: cinnamon, ground coffee and brown sugar
– Slowly, bit by bit, add the pumpkin puree to the mix
– Add the honey last to ensure our mask to be clump free
– Using a spoon if you haven’t already, smash the ingredients together until everything is well blended. Make sure the dry ingredients are infused with the honey and puree.
– The end result should be a thick-ish paste that you are able to spoon up without it slipping off
How to use it:
– Apply the mask onto a clean, bare face using your clean fingers or a spoon, or a brush if that’s how you like it.
– Leave on for about 15-20 minutes, or until the mask is completely tightened.
– Splash your face with warm water to soften up the mask, work your fingers in circular motions to use the coffee ground as an exfoliation.
– Rinse off the rest of the mask in warm water and splash a final splash of cold water to close up the pores.
– Pat to dry with a towel.

Steam Facial

What You’ll Need:
– 20 to 30 leaves of lemongrass (tied up into a knot)
– 10 leaves from a grapefruit tree
– 10 leaves from a lemon tree
– 1/2 ginger (smashed)
– water
What To Do:
– In a pot, throw in all of the ingredients at once.
– Fill the pot with water so that all of the ingredients are covered
– Place the lid on and bring to a boil on high
– Do check up on it every now and then because it might cause an overflow if it continues to boil
How To Use It:
Option 1 – Take the pot off of the stove, lid on and set aside. Hunch yourself over the pot, face directly over the pot and drape a large towel over your head to completely cover the pot. Slowly open the lid bit by bit to let the steam out. Be careful to not open the lid too much at a time or you might risk burning yourself. Continue until there are no longer no more steam OR until you feel like you’ve had enough. Pat to dry.
**Please, please, pleeeeease be extremely cautious because this is boiling water and hot steam we’re dealing with. This could cause burns and/or injuries. I do not recommend this option for beginners or people with sensitive skin. I myself use this option because I have been doing this for years so I know the timing and limits.
Option 2 – Do not take the pot off of the stove but instead turn it to medium-low heat. Set it so that the water is continuously heated so there will be steam but not to the point of boiling. Completely remove the lid. Put your face directly over the pot and let the steam work its magic. Do this for 10-15 minutes OR until you feel like you’ve had enough. Pat to dry.
**I do recommend this for beginners but still, please be very careful!
Option 3 – If you’re still uncomfortable with the idea of hunching over the stove, just pick the pot off the stove, take the lid off and put your face over it (without the towel) until there is no longer steam. Pat to dry.
